Advanced Directives

Advance health care directives, also known as a “health care power of attorney” or a “living will”, allow our clients to control the decisions regarding their health care if you become mentally or physically unable to do so.

We suggest the following issues to consider before creating a health care directive, including:

  • If you are unable to make health care decisions yourself, who will you designate as your agent?
  • What types of life care do or don't you want?
  • What are your preferences regarding surgery, diagnostic testing, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and organ donation?
  •  If you were in an emergency, who would authorities contact first?

Once we create your living will, it is important for you to make sure others know your desires, that you have a living will and that your agents are aware of their duties.  You should notify the hospital that you have a living will as well.
